Dandruff due to climatic conditions

Dandruff often referred as Pityriasis capitis is a skin disorder which most of the population suffer at some stage in their lives.  Normally, a healthy scalp sloughs off the dead cells and replaces it with new ones once in a month. However, from an unhealthy scalp skin cells flakes away every 5 to 7 seven days before they die. These flakes fall all over your collar or shoulders to create embarrassment for you.

Dandruff can come to anyone; however it starts after puberty and stays till middle age or last throughout one’s life.  Also studies reveal that men are more likely to get dandruff as their sebaceous glands are larger in size.  Besides stress, hormonal changes, inadequate sleep and bad immune, climatic conditions also play a vital role in the onset of dandruff. Cold as well as hot weather can trigger dandruff.

Cold weather and dandruff

Cold weather brings joy as it relieves all from scorching sun but the sad part is that it would also trigger dandruff to many who possess unhealthy scalp or any other scalp complaints. During cold weather, the moisture content in the air is very less which makes your skin go dry. Also, the dry indoor heating will aggravate the condition.  The minimal moisture not only affects your skin all over the body but also your scalp causing itchy feeling and sloughs off the dead dry skin.

It’s wise to follow winter hair care tips to save oneself from the dryness of cold weather.

  • Always wear a hat or scarf to stay away from the cold; however don’t tie anything tight as it would affect the blood circulation.
  • Condition your hair daily
  • Avoid going outside with wet hair as it would make your hair brittle and frizzy
  • Use normal shampoos to clean your hair

Hot weather and dandruff

Hot weather can also trigger dandruff. Excess sun’s heat can strip off all moisture and make the scalp dry causing dandruff.  When UV rays falls directly on the scalp, sucks all the moisture in the hair leaving it dry.  The excess dry skin starts to remove the dead cells rapidly resulting in dandruff.

  • A hat or a scarf can protect your scalp from the direct sun rays
  • In case you are not wearing a cap, use UV protection conditioner before you step out in the sun
  • Hydrate yourself properly and make sure there is enough liquid in your body
  • Don’t wash hair very often as it would strip off the moisture content

No matter hot or cold outside, don’t use hair blow dryers, straighteners and curling irons as they wreck your hair and make it very dry, a condition favorable for dandruff.  Don’t wash your hair in hot water as it again leaves your hair dry. Try to use products that do not have too many chemicals in it. Dandruff is embarrassing but it is a problem that can be controlled at any point in time. Your hair can stay healthy for long if you properly care for it.
